My adult children and I will be visiting Akita in September and would like to visit several of the onsens in the area. It has come to my attention that some of these establishments don't allow people with tattoos to visit the baths. I have three medium size tattoos and would like to find out which of the baths will allow me to enjoy their facilities. I have looked at several of the spas websites and they only have phone numbers not email addresses as contact information. Give them a call to find out!
That might be the only way. Almost no onsen allow tattoos, but you can cover it up by putting plasters over them if possible , or I heard that some women put make-up with high coverage on to hide their tattoos. They stayed at Ganiba Onsen which looks awesome and we are actually planning on staying there next year ourselves.
Also, as was said previously, look for Onsen's that have private also called "Family" onsens as you can book them out to use. We stayed in an Onsen near the Snow Monkeys Nagano Prefecture this year with such a facility and as long as my wife didn't wander around showing off her tattoos which would be hard to do anyway! The owners of the Ryokan we stayed at also told us there was no problem with tattoos in the Onsen Village but of course it's always safest to check for yourself.
